For a decade Droid Behavior has pursued and realized its vision of techno in Los Angeles and beyond. The vinyl label, which features as well as develops international artists, has been supported and licensed by key players and groups in the music industry. Aside from the releases, Droid has pushed its message through alternative media such as podcasts, videos, and interviews, helping the group expand its global presence. All these transmissions as well dozens of releases and remixes have contributed to resident artists Drumcell, Audio Injection/Truncate, Raíz, and Luis Flores showcasing and performing their unique take on the music in some of techno’s finest venues around Europe, North America, South America, Japan and Australia. The Droid vibe resonates through the events, most notably Interface, which have now occurred in Los Angeles, Detroit, Denver, and soon New York. It is at Interface that Droid re-asserts its vision of underground nightlife, combining cutting edge talent, earth-shattering sound, and electrifying visuals to create an incomparable and fully immersive music environment.

November 17 we celebrate the contributions many have made to this scene, and the role our city has come to play on the international stage, at Interface 39, the Droid 10-year anniversary. The event will feature performances by residents Drumcell Raíz and Dean Paul as well as an extended set by Berghain’s Marcel Dettmann.

Los Angeles’ finest techno promoters.

Droid Behavior eats, sleeps and shits techno. It says so on their business cards. The crew is nearing a decade as one of Los Angeles’ preeminent promoters of 4/4, a group of DJs, producers, photographers and writers that have filled the need for regular underground techno parties in the city. Raiz (Vangelis and Vidal Vargas) and Drumcell (Moe Espinosa) founded Droid, but over the years things have grown exponentially. Credit for this is down to the trio’s early embrace of email newsletters and online promotion as well as their multimedia-heavy Interface parties, which have seen the likes of Speedy J, Surgeon and Marcel Dettmann all take to the decks. But their tastes also run wider than the usual techno sphere. In recent years, the crew has booked ghetto tech legend DJ Slugo and UK avant dubstepper Vex’d. In conjunction with our Clubbing in Los Angeles feature, Jonny Coleman sat down with the group to talk about the city and techno’s place within it.

Jonny Coleman tackles the multi-farious scene in one of America’s biggest cities.

Los Angeles has always been a capital of pop culture. Outside of rave, however, it’s never had much of a reputation for its dance music culture. Until recently, that is. The efforts of local promoters have given rise to enormous EDM festivals, the Low End Theory-driven beat scene and thriving techno and house crews—and have led to the city finally becoming internationally recognized. Now, it seems, a place that houses four million people inside the city limits and 18 million in the greater Southland area, is finally representing itself on the world stage.

Droid Behavior presents PRIME: Perc Trax Tour | 6.07

“Perc will head to the US to play a weekend of parties, beginning in Los Angeles on Thursday, June 7th. A veteran DJ and producer with a penchant for industrialized, broken beat techno, Perc has made tracks for numerous labels like CLR, Stroboscopic Artefacts and Electric Deluxe, where he’s collaborated with Giorgio Gigli under the alias Endless. Of course, he’s just as well known for Perc Trax, the label he founded in 2004 which has put out similarly tough and experimental sounds from ASC, Forward Strategy Group and others, and which got our nod for label of the month last December. For this upcoming mini-tour Perc is set to team up with three of his label’s American artists including Jeff Derringer, who’s on the bill at all three events. First up on Thursday the 7th is a party at Medusa Lounge in LA, hosted by Droid Behavior, followed by a night in Denver with Mick Finesse at 2200. The weekend winds down in New York at National Underground with the next edition of Derringer’s Oktave party, where Donor is also confirmed.” - RA press release.

D-Node 157: Daedelus Live at PRIME

Appropriately sharing his name with the master craftsman of Greek mythology, Daedelus has become a revered figure of LA’s electronic music scene. A boundary-crosser comfortable with sweet soundtrack strings, splintered breaks, rap vocals, and raved-up synth loops (sometimes all at the same time), he’s welcome in a wide range of music circles, including a few Droid performances over the years. When we teamed up with Friendly Integration for the March edition of PRIME, we knew it was the perfect time to bring him back for our crowd. Daedelus delivered an uptempo, polyglot sequence of sounds on the verge of collapse. We’re excited to present this unique recording of his set at PRIME, definitely not to be missed.

Los Angeles native Alland Byallo became a central figure of the techno scene in San Francisco before his recent move to Berlin. A sought-after DJ playing international club gigs, he’s also been making his way into DJ crates around the world over the past 8 years or so with his minimal and tech-house tracks, many on his own Nightlight Music as well as Poker Flat. He’s also a driving force behind [KONTROL], the Bay Area’s premiere techno event. For Droid he’s provided a two-hour set with a diverse tracklist spanning dance music’s genres.

Droid at Sublevel NYE / 10 Year Anniversary

“There will be dozens of parties scattered across Southern California this weekend, but if we had to pick just one it would probably be Sublevel Space Explorer’s New Year’s Eve and 10th anniversary event, featuring three of LA’s best: Doc Martin and Droid Behavior residents Raiz and Drumcell.” - from residentadvisor.net This year’s theme at Sublevel Space Explorer is Unification. LA house don, Doc Martin has asked Droid residents Raiz and Drumcell to join in the sonic cu-ration of his 10th Anniversary event. Also joining the celebration will be Joe Bickle of Animal Club and Charles Fox. This event marks a meeting of the minds with a consolidation of leaders from the underground scenes in Los Angeles.
