This week we bring you another mix informed by years of experience, this one by American producer Andrei Morant. Morant’s been DJing since the ’80s and releasing techno since the ’90s on labels like Planet Rhythm, Template and his own Scope Recordings, founded in 2003. Spend an hour immersed in his sound, with a mix filled mostly with originals and his own remixes. Andrei will perform at this year’s Interface / Scene event in Detroit during movement weekend.

Austrian DJ/producer Sutter Cane is the founder of Driving Forces, promoter of a monthly techno club series called BOINK!, and A&R of Driving Forces Recordings. As a known remixer he’s worked with artists like Sasha Carassi, Space Djz, Virgil Enzinger, Pfirter, Gayle San, Roberto Capuano, A. Paul, and BCR Boys. His latest releases include the Outer Limits EP on Nachtstrom Schallplatten and Thorium / Chemtrails on Sasha Carassi’s Phobiq.

For this week’s D-Node he’s put together a set of techno primed to please our listeners, including tracks and remixes from Truncate and Drumcell. Tracklist below.

OVERVIEW:

David Flores surfaces as Audio Injection with No Key EP, two slabs of pristine techno for the new year. After owning 2011 & 2012 with over a dozen releases as Truncate, Audio Injection flexes some production muscle to put out a sound that’s as huge as it is hypnotic. The A side features Deep Thought, a seven-minute obsession around a short melodic fragment that speeds at 130 BPM through a paranoid passage of beguiling rhythm. The B side features title track No Key, a demolishing groove that builds and breaks but never lets go. Machined percussion and tonal beats carve their way through an arena-sized rabbit hole with detail and dimension.

When Brian the young innovator, came across a music program on a friend´s Amiga 500, the desire to produce his own sound started to grow within. In the beginning he experimented with Hip Hop beats, but triggered by a “The Prodigy” gig he started focusing more and more on Techno. As much as for many of his contemporaries in the nineties, the legendary “Omen” club in Frankfurt served as a source of inspiration for him. His first two records under the pseudonym “Relic” were released on the label “Triebtäter” in 2000 and 2001.

After this he took the next step and founded his own label “Enable Recordings”, on which he presents artists like “The Advent” or Andre Walter, next to his own productions. Little by little, Brian got the opportunity to release on further labels as well, for instance “Punkt Music” or “Definition Records”. At the same time he produced the project “Citizen Art” together with the artist ”Cess”, and amongst others released a remix for “The Horrorist” on “Things To Come”. But ultimately they were his own releases that turned him into a much requested live act. In the course of his transfer to CLR Booking in 2005, his booking schedule increased from the main floor of “Nature One”, to the “Detroit Electronic Music Festival” in the States to his preliminary peak at “Spinclub” / Ibiza. Next to his well-established label “Enable Recordings”, he founded another imprint called “Sonata Music” in the beginning of 2008. Although it was planned as a digital only label, he started releasing the tracks on vinyl as well, due to the big success. In October 2008, the album prerelease single “Cortosis” came out, together with a remix by Chris Liebing. In November 2008, the long awaited first Studio album “Stereotype” was finally released on his all-time favorite Techno labelCLR. “A stylistically versatile, entirely club oriented record with traces of Minimal, House and Dub, always true to its Techno origins.” When Brian is not touring as a live act, or producing new tracks and remixes, he is also working as a highly successful mastering technician with clients like CLR, Cocoon Recordings or Spinclub Recordings, just to mention a few.

The 6th annual convention inspired event brings together forward thinking production groups Droid Behavior, Capsule Labs, Trash Audio and Friendly Integration to present a night of analog and digital hardware performances. Expect a variety of modular synthesizers, drum machines, control voltage and random noise generation. These activities will take place at Capsule Labs pressing plant. Vinyl production demos will be held throughout the night as well a direct to lacquer disc recording of select performances. BL__K NOISE is for industry by industry. Outside guests and appreciators of the art are welcome.

TRASH_AUDIO is an artist collective with a specialization of synthesizers, and in particular modular synthesizers. Reviews, news, and opinions on the gear they use. They are responsible bridging the gap between user and manufacturer by hosting parties, shows and educational workshops around the country while having the companies present.

Capsule labs is analog recording, mastering and vinyl pressing facility in a creative workspace that allows artists to experiment with direct to disc recordings.

ABOUT VATICAN SHADOW:
Vatican Shadow is the military-inspired project of the Hospital Productions label boss Dominick Fernow (Prurient). Drawing upon and manipulating images of the harrowing realities of modern U.S. warfare, Fernow created his shadowy, harsh electronic sounds by using stems and tracks and then separating them onto cassette, which is then re-layered and distorted. Weaving the cassettes into each other like one would use turntables, the hypnotic and sometimes sinister noises were first heard in 2010 on the limited-edition EP Byzantine Private CIA in 2010. Ten more of these limited releases would follow between 2011 and 2012 on his own Hospital Productions label. His first long-player was Kneel Before Religious Icons in 2011. It received a rapturous reception, with critics lauding Fernow’s unholy amalgamation of an intelligent and thought-provoking concept with brutal and despondent sounds. In 2012, he released two albums (Atta’s Apartment Slated for Demolition and Ghosts of Chechnya) on his own label, and Ornamented Walls on Modern Love. He also made guest appearances on other labels by releasing the 12” September Cell on Bed of Nails and Iraqi Praetorian Guard on Blackest Ever Black. It was during this year that he embarked on a European tour, pummeling audiences with some powerful and unforgettable performances.

ABOUT ALESSANDRO CORITINI:
Alessandro Cortini’s experience spans from working in the studio and on the road with several notable bands like Nine Inch Nails, Muse, ModWheelMood, SONOIO, Ladytron and many others. He also served on the staff of Musician’s Institute in LA and guest lectures at Berklee School of Music in Boston. He is highly regarded and sought after for his unique approach and experience with synthesizers, specifically his mastery over the arcane Buchla system.

ABOUT MARK VERBOS:
Ignoring traditional values and established methods for creating a career in music has taken Mark Verbos on a journey unlike any other producer, DJ, engineer or recording artists. Mark’s interest in music began at a vary young age when he began playing instruments and reading music at the age of 5. As a teenager, his interest turned to electronic music and he began playing live sets at Drop Bass Network parties in 1993. By the mid 90′s he had released several EPs of his own and began working, as an engineer, in a professional Chicago recording studio. He worked on every imaginable music style, specializing in electronic dance music, with clients including Farley Jackmaster Funk, Ralphie Rosario, Mike Dunn, M Doc, Braxton Holmes, Vince Lawrence and The Final Cut. At this time, Mark started his own label, Simple Answer. In the year 2000 he moved to Berlin to further persue his personal DJ and recording career. he toured throughout Europe as well as Australia. In 2003 Mark moved back to the US, this time to New York and has continued to record and produce other artists, in addition to his own music. His work with Tommie Sunshine is of particular note, having produced more than 50 remixes and several EPs together under the names Binge & Purge and simply Tommie Sunshine. Since 2005 Mark has returned to playing live shows, completely improvised, using nothing but the analog hardware he used way back in 1993. He has received critical acclaim for performances in Miami, Chicago, Detroit, Berlin, Amsterdam, New York and many other cities.

As one of the highest respected sound designers in the industry, Richard Devine’s work extends into almost every facet where audio is employed. His unique music approach attracted notable artists for collaboration and remixing including Aphex Twin, Mike Patton, Nine Inch Nails, Otto von Schirach, BT, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Puscifer and more. Richard has released several design libraries including Mechanical Morph, Transform, Pulse and The Electronic Manuscript which won 2009′s best sample library by Remix Technology Awards. Ukrainian Yan Cook AKA Eigenes Rezept presents an hour and a half of deep techno. Cook, who released his full-length this year on Silent Steps, actually takes his name from his culinary expertise, but it’s his work in deeper dimensions of techno that brought him to Berlin’s storied (and re-opened) club Tresor earlier this year. The home of hard techno hosted Cook for this live PA, a perfect introduction to the young producer.

For a decade Droid Behavior has pursued and realized its vision of techno in Los Angeles and beyond. The vinyl label, which features as well as develops international artists, has been supported and licensed by key players and groups in the music industry. Aside from the releases, Droid has pushed its message through alternative media such as podcasts, videos, and interviews, helping the group expand its global presence. All these transmissions as well dozens of releases and remixes have contributed to resident artists Drumcell, Audio Injection/Truncate, Raíz, and Luis Flores showcasing and performing their unique take on the music in some of techno’s finest venues around Europe, North America, South America, Japan and Australia. The Droid vibe resonates through the events, most notably Interface, which have now occurred in Los Angeles, Detroit, Denver, and soon New York. It is at Interface that Droid re-asserts its vision of underground nightlife, combining cutting edge talent, earth-shattering sound, and electrifying visuals to create an incomparable and fully immersive music environment.

November 17 we celebrate the contributions many have made to this scene, and the role our city has come to play on the international stage, at Interface 39, the Droid 10-year anniversary. The event will feature performances by residents Drumcell Raíz and Dean Paul as well as an extended set by Berghain’s Marcel Dettmann.
