Berlin’s Material Object makes music with a VCO dial in one hand and a mouse in the other. With releases on Droid, Perc, FAX, Silent Steps, and others, he’s grown in recognition over the past few years to tour the globe with his blend of percussive and darker edged techno. This year he’s collaborating with Luis Flores as Impact Unit, playing at Berlin CTM show alongside Atom TM, and performing a solo live set at Labyrinth. On March 23, Material Object performed an energetic set at Tresor Berlin, and we’re fortunate to have an excerpt to share. Hype tracks, inventive mixes, and telling crowd noise come together.

OVERVIEW:

David Flores surfaces as Audio Injection with No Key EP, two slabs of pristine techno for the new year. After owning 2011 & 2012 with over a dozen releases as Truncate, Audio Injection flexes some production muscle to put out a sound that’s as huge as it is hypnotic. The A side features Deep Thought, a seven-minute obsession around a short melodic fragment that speeds at 130 BPM through a paranoid passage of beguiling rhythm. The B side features title track No Key, a demolishing groove that builds and breaks but never lets go. Machined percussion and tonal beats carve their way through an arena-sized rabbit hole with detail and dimension.

For a decade Droid Behavior has pursued and realized its vision of techno in Los Angeles and beyond. The vinyl label, which features as well as develops international artists, has been supported and licensed by key players and groups in the music industry. Aside from the releases, Droid has pushed its message through alternative media such as podcasts, videos, and interviews, helping the group expand its global presence. All these transmissions as well dozens of releases and remixes have contributed to resident artists Drumcell, Audio Injection/Truncate, Raíz, and Luis Flores showcasing and performing their unique take on the music in some of techno’s finest venues around Europe, North America, South America, Japan and Australia. The Droid vibe resonates through the events, most notably Interface, which have now occurred in Los Angeles, Detroit, Denver, and soon New York. It is at Interface that Droid re-asserts its vision of underground nightlife, combining cutting edge talent, earth-shattering sound, and electrifying visuals to create an incomparable and fully immersive music environment.

November 17 we celebrate the contributions many have made to this scene, and the role our city has come to play on the international stage, at Interface 39, the Droid 10-year anniversary. The event will feature performances by residents Drumcell Raíz and Dean Paul as well as an extended set by Berghain’s Marcel Dettmann.

OVERVIEW:

MODZ is the highly anticipated collaboration between Dustin Zahn of Minneapolis’ Enemy Records and Berlin-based producer Material Object, fresh from a more subdued collaboration with Pete Namlook. SIGNALS begins in dark territory with the pulse of an alien telegraph, but after a minute of tension the track screeches into collision with with a 10-ton kick. Attentive sound design and a growing, hypnotic pulse slowly craft a detailed environment fit for the largest of systems. PROMOTION OF VICE jumps straight into its main rhythm, proceeding with expertly placed embellishments, ebbing the track in and out of intensities and moody environments. PREVENTION OF VIRTUE picks up the pace and expands on some of VICE’S themes, opening the track to a wider sound and an equally wide appeal for the dance floor.

Kyle Geiger broke into the industry with heavy hitting releases on Drumcode in 2008 and his flawless yet powerful sets that earned him Adam Beyer‘s endorsement as breakthrough DJ of the year. After 4 years of touring, remixing and releasing, Kyle has refined his sound which can be found on his own newly formed imprint Cubera. This set offers a taste of Geiger’s musical interpretation as heard within the legendary Tresor walls. Droid resident artists David Flores (Audio Injection/Truncate) and Vangelis + Vidal Vargas (Raíz) combine their production elements on the Degrees of Motion EP. David has been burning up the industry charts with his latest raw vibe alias Truncate. The spring/summer season in Europe would have been quite silent had it not been for the phrases CONCENTRATE and FOCUS. With releases and remixes on Enemy, Modularz and his own Truncate imprint, David has enjoyed strong support from renowned acts Dettmann, Klock, Luke Slater, Chris Liebing, Speedy J, DVS1 and countless others. The members of Raíz, Vangelis and Vidal Vargas, have also been making waves with their work on Historia Y Violencia, Silent Steps, Gynoid, and Droid. On this collaboration David and the Vargas brothers combine the dry and groovy tool perfection of Truncate with the concept and sense of depth Raíz has been developing over the last year. The result is a series of 3 flawless tracks exemplifying the Degrees of Motion. Inertia builds the EP with heavy drum programming and warm pad work. Flux takes the energy up a notch with hard swing percussion, sharp analog noise and arctic synthesis. Jude Law leaves his seed. Rhythm completes the cycle with a deeply grounded pulse, accented by an enigmatic call to consciousness and presence. Degrees of Motion is a solid showcase of this production team’s potential.

With releases from himself and artists like Emptyset, Sleeparchive, and Developer, this mix exhibits his current direction. Los Angeles born and bred, Vangelis and Vidal Vargas were raised in the ’80s on a steady diet of Latin freestyle, electro, and new wave that pervaded their urban environment. Their father also exposed them to cutting edge progressive acts Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk, planting early seeds for aural exploration. By the mid ’90s they were sampling LA’s underground club scene and heavily researching electronic music’s roots. After years of influence they began to express their musical vision through their own recordings and performances. Vidal and Vangelis eventually found common ground with producer / performer Drumcell, and in 2002 they formed the Droid Behavior event production group and record label out of frustration with the city’s lack of knowledge, acceptance, and understanding for Midwest-bred techno and house music and their European counterparts. As producers Vangelis and Vidal have released and licensed original music and remixes under various aliases (most notably Acid Circus and Raíz) on the Droid Recordings imprint as well as respected labels Historia y Violencia, Tora Tora Tora, DJMag, Music Man, Resident Advisor, Enemy Rec, Gynoid, Reloading, Micro.Fon and Timefog. Their music has been charted, played and supported by Speedy J, Chris Liebing, Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock, DVS1, Levon Vincent, Jonas Kopp, etc. Their intense and inspiring performances have placed them alongside major players Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Derrick May, Dan Bell, Surgeon, Sandwell District, Robag, Paco Osuna, Pan Pot, Marco Carola, Detroit Grand Pubahs, and Ostgut residents at undergrounds, festivals, after hours, and club nights all over the Americas, and Europe including Berghain in Berlin. The members or Raiz not only produce for Droid recordings but also help manage the label as well over see all event production, bookings, the droid podcast, and blog site.
