OVERVIEW:

Luis Flores’ New Flesh EP is the Mexican producer’s second release for the American powerhouse techno imprint: Droid Recordings. The title track, built around the “new flesh” vocal sample from cult horror movie: Videodrome, is a dark, trance inducing affair, constructed around the soundscapes the modulated voice renders and the subsonic groove that identifies Flores’ productions. Drumcell pushes the track into deeper, darker territory, showcasing his mastery of modular synthesis, and delivers a hypnotic experience which seamlessly carries the listener from beginning to end in the most organic fashion. CLR mastering resident, Brian Sanhaji, dramatically transforms the piece into a screeching industrial monster, armed with relentless drum work which takes full advantage Sahhaji’s sound expertise, resulting in a wall of sound that demands the listener’s full attention. Flores’ B title: Excision, completes this release with an adrenaline-fused take on the Droid sound. Driven by a rolling bassline, the track propels the audience through a tense, paranoid journey, riddled with metallic vocoded voices and synths and a wasp-like sounding shaker that keeps anyone listening, ever on alert. Delivered on limited edition white 12” with hand silk screened jackets, this marks a benchmark on Droids physical releases, going beyond the inherent functional aspect of the object and into the fetishistic lust vinyl promises. All is rounded up with the inclusion of French artist and photographer Nihil Sth work, through his piece “Human”, as the focal image upon which the artwork and the release’s extras are constructed upon. The digital version of the EP includes two alternate versions of New Flesh by Flores and Sanhaji, respectively, and a dj tool of Excision

Appropriately sharing his name with the master craftsman of Greek mythology, Daedelus has become a revered figure of LA’s electronic music scene. A boundary-crosser comfortable with sweet soundtrack strings, splintered breaks, rap vocals, and raved-up synth loops (sometimes all at the same time), he’s welcome in a wide range of music circles, including a few Droid performances over the years. When we teamed up with Friendly Integration for the March edition of PRIME, we knew it was the perfect time to bring him back for our crowd. Daedelus delivered an uptempo, polyglot sequence of sounds on the verge of collapse. We’re excited to present this unique recording of his set at PRIME, definitely not to be missed.

D-Node 156: ASC Live at Tar & Feathered NYC

ASC is perhaps best known as a contemporary UK drum & bass producer with a talent for atmosphere, but in the past few years his music has been completing a drift toward techno and other experiments. 2010′s style-traversing Nothing Is Certain on Nonplus grabbed the attention of music listeners across genres for its strong sonic vision, and a unique release last year on Mote Evolver placed ASC squarely in the sights of the techno tunnel visioners. The past 12 months have been particularly productive, with EPs across a range of labels. Now a resident of San Diego, ASC’s set to release Out of Sync in a few months, but in the meantime techno fans should check his January release for Perc Trax, as well as his more D&B-leaning sound for the latest release on his own Auxiliary, both embedded below.

On March 24 he was invited to DJ the first Tar & Feathered show in NYC, where he kept things moving around a dark futurist techno base. Luckily the recording fell into our hands, and we’re glad to share it with our podcast subscribers. Mostly originals.

Subversive + Voiski on Construct Re-Form (FR)

Subversive releases his second EP on Construct Re-Form alongside Parisian operative Voiski. Their mission: Deception Plan.

Deception Plan is a plan of action executed by two operatives coordinating from two different cities, Los Angeles and Paris. The two locations brings together two different modes of music to form the plan. The operatives take camouflage in the plan, letting the music be at the center. The sound created by the plan is loaded with deep synths and driving drums with melodies that try to reach the subconscious, a type of psychological warfare. The operative at the Paris location is Doryan Javan, a discrete urban warrior and activist, formerly working as a night taxi driver. His musical activity is obscure and unknown. He is leaving in a south red banlieue of Paris, producing techno near his family and friends of the French electronic youth squad. The operative in Los Angeles is R. Hernandez aka Subversive. He has operated for projects like Historia and Violencia and currently participates with the droidbehavior infrastructure in L.A. since 2002, mixing under the codename Subversive. Hernandez creates a chord driven, dub influenced techno sound.

Kyle Geiger broke into the industry with heavy hitting releases on Drumcode in 2008 and his flawless yet powerful sets that earned him Adam Beyer‘s endorsement as breakthrough DJ of the year. After 4 years of touring, remixing and releasing, Kyle has refined his sound which can be found on his own newly formed imprint Cubera. This set offers a taste of Geiger’s musical interpretation as heard within the legendary Tresor walls. D-Node 154: Cabarete Groove | Machine Box

Inspired by the unique underground party scene of the Dominican Republic’s Cabarete Beach in the late ’90s, the Cabarete Groove duo perform a hybrid DJ set featuring live sound design and original tracks. “We like a sound that reflects a pure Techno essence, a lot of experimentation, blinding darkness and ground shaking industrial sounds.”

After playing out for a few years they went to Full Sail in Florida to work on their Recording Arts Degrees and after graduating published their first couple of singles. Their most experimental work to date, the dark “On/Off Omni EP,” features remixes from Drumcell, Perc, Alex Bau, and Ascion. Another recent release is the Tourette’s Syndrome EP on Silent Steps including a remix by JPLS and a mix by Michael Schwarz, which is track 7 of this podcast. They’re soon to release a follow-up to their Beatport minimal chart dominator Weird Things & Strange Noises for Australian label Elektrax Music.

The set for D-node 154 begins with dark and dubby tracks and builds into some peak hour intensity.

Los Angeles born and bred, Vangelis and Vidal Vargas were raised in the ’80s on a steady diet of Latin freestyle, electro, and new wave that pervaded their urban environment. Their father also exposed them to cutting edge progressive acts Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk, planting early seeds for aural exploration. By the mid ’90s they were sampling LA’s underground club scene and heavily researching electronic music’s roots. After years of influence they began to express their musical vision through their own recordings and performances. Vidal and Vangelis eventually found common ground with producer / performer Drumcell, and in 2002 they formed the Droid Behavior event production group and record label out of frustration with the city’s lack of knowledge, acceptance, and understanding for Midwest-bred techno and house music and their European counterparts.

As producers Vangelis and Vidal have released and licensed original music and remixes under various aliases (most notably Acid Circus and Raíz) on the Droid Recordings imprint as well as respected labels Historia y Violencia, Tora Tora Tora, DJMag, Music Man, Resident Advisor, and many more.

Nikki Cross is a young Los Angeles based artist working with paper and the ancient art of origami paper-folding. She designs, prints and cuts her own unique translucent paper which she uses to fold 3-dimensional origami models. She enjoys tweaking traditional Japanese origami base folds, and making up her own fold patterns for origami flowers, leaves and foliage. Cross runs her own Etsy shop, where she sells her paper and origami, as well as sketchbooks and stationary. Cross also paints with oils, but finds paper to be her source of instant gratification. With an infinity of options, origami teaches us to think openly and be fearless, because all you have to lose is a little piece of paper.

Two Rabbits Studios is a design firm, commercial screen print shop,
and fine art studio ran by Los Angeles-based artists Mike Thacker and Bob Motown. Since 2007, the pair have designed and printed hundreds of rock posters and promotional pieces for movies and video games. Two Rabbits started small in a North Hollywood backyard—less than five years later, and they’ve been featured in galleries, Flatstock poster shows, and craft fairs in the United States and UK. They’ve worked with Warner Music Group and concert promoters Goldenvoice for artists ranging from Skrillex to Wu Tang to Portishead. Recently, Thacker and Motown’s focus has been on fine art pieces that reflect upon their hand-printed process and design.

Thomas McMahan has been working professionally as a director, designer and animator in New York City and Los Angeles for the past seven years . He has worked for various corporate clients such as MTV, Nike, The Academy Awards, IFC, HBO, and Thrasher Magazine. In addition to his work in commercial and film, Thomas has worked on a wide variety of collaborative projects. These efforts include working with Malcolm McDowell to create and design a limited edition Clockwork Orange inspired screen print as well as teaming up with painter Mark Whalen and musician Carla Azar to create a large scale video and audio installation at Merry Karnowsky gallery in Los Angeles. In 2006, Thomas founded and curated Paperworks Laboratories, a project designed to create and sell limited edition prints with successful artists such as Retna, Know Hope, El Mac, Victor Reyes and Estevan Oriol. His most recent work includes writing and directing a fully animated music video for the Los Angeles based band Autolux, and acting as lead designer/animator for both the 83rd Annual Academy Awards and the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.

In cities across America, there are those people who take on the struggle to keep proper dance music a part of their cultural landscape. Will Azada has been one of those guys for awhile now, and last year he launched his label, Proper Trax, to expand that ideal of proper house and techno out of Knoxville, Tennessee.

With his new label and releases on Woods ‘N Bass, Mystical Disco, and Bleep Sequence, Azada steps into the producers arena to showcase his personal vision for dance music. For D-Node 153, we present a set consisting of 20 Azada originals, with a few other tracks in the mix.
