Droid hit maker David Flores AKA Audio Injection has become one of the West Coast’s most prolific techno producers in 2010 with releases on Timefog, Enemy, Subsensory, 4track, Impact Mechanics, Droid, Recordings, and an upcoming remix with production partner Drumcell on, CLR. Well known for his collab work with Drumcell, Audio Injection comes into his own on Droid 10 with remixes by Luis Flores, Acid Circus and Ambivalent.

“Normal World” gets the EP started with a classic rolling bass line and a building analog riff in triplets. The opener is stark, heady, and heavy, that unmistakable warehouse sound. The title track “Exit Strategy” ebbs and flows with a dark atmosphere carrying the listener through low end growls and space verb clangs. On the flip side “I’ve Fallen” pushes an addictive rhythm track that evolves alongside heavy bass, techno mono synths, and the twisted chorus “can’t get up.”

Luis Flores reworks “Exit Strategy” from a tempered builder to a funky hoover bass workout, RZ-1 clap and all. Acerbic synth lines creep in an out of the 7-minute sequence and into the listener’s subconscious.

Acid Circus ups the ante on this reinterpretation of “Normal World,” a high energy mix. Crisp noise, tribal grooves, and thick analog synths all find their place on this thundering dance-floor explosion. Flange back hats and reversed subliminal messages fill out the atmosphere.

Minus henchman Ambivalent injects a dose of a minimal funk into the “I’ve Fallen” mix. A hypnotizing vocal riff surfaces throughout the mix, accompanied by a shuffling rims-hot and intensely provocative sonic saturation.

Los Angeles transplant via Virginia, Chris Thomas aka xfive debuts his first true techno EP on Droid Digital. Chris is a man of many monikers with releases and collaborations on Voidloss’s techno / grime label SINGULARITY as Villian and dark electro noise under his own name C Thomas. As xfive, Chris brings a unique spin to Droid’s signature sound with deeper references to Chicago and Detroit including lush synth work and stark drum programming on his “Instillation EP.”

On remix duties, Chris has commissioned long time friend and UK techno legend Paul Mac of Stimulus / Primate / Theory fame and Droid Label head Drumcell. Paul takes a slightly militant approach on his interpretation of “Instiller” for heavier club deployment. Drumcell thickens up the mix on his revision of this future classic.

Track A ‘Confluence’ is Basic Channel-influenced dub techno complete with echo chords and tight percussion grooves that hinting towards house. Crisp production and mid tempo pacing make this perfect for opening / closing duties and leeway to pensive territory.

The title track ‘Instiller’ flips the script with dissonant, bone-chilling synth work and heavier drums pacing throughout the 8 minutes of pure techno bliss. This track is for fans of the long mix with plenty of rises and falls that keep things interesting on the dancefloor.

Paul Mac injects both hi-fidelity and sonic muscle into his version of ‘Instiller.’ The strong groove becomes noticeable with its frontal crash cymbals, offbeat stabs and peppering of 303s across the mix. Paul retains the best elements from the original and toughens them up with booming bass and sharp percussion that will keep crowds moving to the early morning in any situation.

Drumcell layers the originals main groove and dissonance over a battle hardened drum lines. His attention to sound design detail and synth wash intricacies move this 7 minute epic along smoothly until the break down leaves listeners suspended in mid air. 32 bars later the bass kicks back in and slams those same listeners back into submission.

This year’s DETROIT ELECTRONIC MOVEMENT FESTIVAL was treated to a special guest appearance by Droid label head Moe Espinosa aka Drumcell. When Radioslave could not make his appearance on the Beatport stage the good people at Paxahau called on Moe for a last minute replacement. His unexpected warm up set for Chris Liebing had confused crowds dancing their hearts out in the pouring rain… in true Detroit fashion. Needless to say he delivered a stellar set that was more then equivalent to his European Fill in. Check below for video evidence of Drumcell serving the Movement audience with pure Droid style.

This week Drumcell makes his debut appearance in Ibiza Spain alongside Matthew Johnson and Chris Liebing at the CLR / SPACE residency. Also Coming soon from the CLR camp will be remixes from Drumcell vs Audio Injection, Dustin Zahn vs Decimal, and Edit – Select.

100 podcast episodes and no signs of slowing down…. this is a testament to Droid Behavior’s dedication to pushing the music forward. For this special occasion we chose a section from Vangelis and Vidal Vargas’ live debut in Berlin at the Weddingmania Underground, which was a near equivalent to Interface in Germany. The event was literally held in the basement of a retail store with bass cabinets scattered across the dark sweaty venue and a sea of heads and hands in the air covering every square foot of walking space.

This excerpt from their 3 hour set is only a snapshot of their no holds barred mixing style spanning from deep, hard techno to tribal house and classic influences chopped, screwed, and re-edited live for the club via Traktor and Ableton technology. Vangelis and Vidal also showcase their new and unreleased material as “Raíz” towards the latter half of this set. Enjoy the sights and sounds as we have included video evidence from the monumental night below. In the words of Justin Berkovi, “Jackitpackit.”

James Patrick is a composer, artist, DJ, producer, promoter, and educator (busy guy) working out of Minneapolis. He’s been making music for over a decade and blessed Timefog with its first release, his Meat Hooks EP, last year.

For this installment of D-Node he contributed a live/DJ hybrid set, a work evolving through his performances in Minneapolis and elsewhere.

We were opening up for Skoozbot at First Avenue Nightclub, the club from Purple Rain (Prince).

This spot has become a Minneapolis staple for the underground techno movement, a pitch black room hosted by the Particle People, showcasing the world’s finest deep/minimal/techno sounds.

This set in particular has been a work in progress for the last 2 years of my life. It’s a live/DJ hybrid set that showcases all of my own works, alongside some of my favorite productions.

I use sounds from all around my daily life. I play with Jazz musicians. I teach music to brilliant young artists every day. All of these sounds are potential material.

There are a total of 16 channels. 1-8 are all drums/machines/percussion. I use a JoMox MBase, a Faderfox for my effects, and an APC40 for my sequence control. 9-16 are all synths, samplers, and audio channels. I then use a series of about 10 custom Max patches and an iPod touch w/ Touch OSC for my time based processes. The patches are mostly for effect modulation, but several of them are designed to maintain clip playback control, a kind of “global conductor” device that allows for fading between sequences and rhythmic variations. The best part is when I can pass around the WiFi iPod and let the dancefloor grab hold of the music… it’s a blast.

The events in which this music can be heard are most often tagged as “Timefog” nights. Timefog is our own “small town” label.. with an international scope. We’ve been using it as a platform to bring Minneapolis to the attention of the international music community. Audio Injection, Acid Circus, and Drumcell all make their collective debut in Berlin, Germany this week. These events are sure to be epic as the Droid Behavior team perform their signature warehouse sounds for techno’s elite at some of the most high profile clubs in Europe. Drumcell will also join Chris Liebing on the last leg of his CLR showcase tour with appearances in Dusseldorf, Switzerland, Berlin and Madrid.

Acid Circus cruises over for a quick one off in Berlin at the highly anticipated party night “Weddingmania vs Möbelrücken” with Channel X in between an extremely busy LA schedule including their Sunday gig at Lies May 2nd, The Droid hosted Technique night w/ Jerry Abstract on May 11th and their Droid Showcase at King King May 14th w/ Dustin Zahn and Dean Paul.

Drumcell and Audio Injection have the very distinct honor of performing at Berghain’s legendary Klubnacht w/ Chris Liebing. Also on the bill will be Panorama Bar resident Cassy alongside Martin Buttrich and Loco Dice of Desolat fame. The caliber of talent for this night might be considered intimidating….let’s wish them luck as Drumcell and Audio Injection rock the main floor from 12am-9am.

CPU joins visual team on Plastikman Tour 2010

Droid visualist Bryant Place has been selected among the ranks to join Richie Hawtin’s mutli-media crew for the upcoming Plastikman tour. He has been chosen as one of the winners via the Touch Derivative contest.

Bryant, who has been using Touch for only six months, has been very active in that period of time. Some of his work has already been profiled on the Derivative blog. The Derivative team sits down to chat with Bryant about his upcoming projects and techniques in the following interview.

D-Node 096: Ed Isar Live in Los Angeles

Ed Isar’s hard hitting closing set has now been released from the archives for your podcast streaming pleasure. Ed cut his teeth in London and Paris DJing, researching and blogging for the popular webzine http://www.getthecurse.com which has been dedicated to pronouncing the latest and greatest in underground electronic music. Recently the blog site has turned vinyl/digital imprint and will soon add their sonic input / output through the Industry.

Ed explains his LA debut at the Droid presents Jimmy Edgar event as a collage of “dark, druggy, weird bangers…etched in Get The Curse canon.” His objective: “hit’em hard…[then] bring things down ever so slightly.” Included in this mix you will find music from such labels as Ladomat 2000, Ostgut Ton, and aritsts Psycatron, Inxec, Maetrik, Harry Axt and Luna City Express, Alex Celler, Pascal FEOS and Mathew Jonson for the last bit. Droid Behavior is very proud to announce Drumcell and CPU’s debut audio / visual performance at this year’s Brussels Electronic Music Festival. They will be joining Luis Flores from Guadalajara as well as many other talents from south of the border as part of the Mexican Electronica Showcase. The show will feature artists from Nopal Beat, Antena Discos, and Droid Behavior. This will also be the first of many more European dates fro Drumcell and other Droid Behavior artists.

Other headlining talents throughout the 3 day festival will include Chris De Luca, Thomas Brinkman, Hexstatic, Sierra Sam, Dan Curtain and a Raster-Noton showcase.

Droid Behavior jaunts over to the Midwest this weekend. The West Coast institution sends over their premier live performers for a quick Tour De Force.

Friday night Acid Circus plays with J.Phlip of Dirtybird SF at Hot Water Milwaukee. Saturday night they join Justin Long in the SHY for a session in thump at his DOTBLEEP residency located at the world renown Smart Bar. Just 8 hours west the same night, Drumcell hits Minneapolis’ Black VIP at the once PRINCE OWNED 1st Avenue Nightclub. Complementing talent that night will also include MPLS latest home-bred international talent DVS1 of Klockworks / Timefog. Expect the best in deep dark techno and minimal for this intimate event and as always, keep your ears to the ground for that secret after hours.
