D-Node 144: Henning Baer | Grounded Theory + K209 DE

Henning Baer is one of the founders behind Berlin’s leading Grounded Theory parties, and as a producer turned heads last year with his releases on K209 including work with Sawf and Milton Bradley, which he discusses in-depth in an interview with TEA. Coincidentally we ran into Henning during our last European tour. One night while in Berlin, i went out for a late night döner and giant vanilla coke. Upon returning to the lobby of my hotel one of the bar staff told me i could not bring outside food to the lounge. I grumbled off back to my room and finished my dinner. My brother stepped out for a night cap and he was recognized by the bar keep as a member of Raíz. It turns out the bar keep was Henning Baer and he just so happened to be on shift. He apologized and invited us to Grounded Theory that weekend with a special appearance by Ben Klock. We went, we saw, he conquered. Aside from curating the excellent club nights, Henning Baer is heading into a bright 2012 as producer and performer. He presents this mix for D-Node 144, filled with a dark, driving strain of contemporary techno.

We asked Baer to share a few thoughts about five of the tracks in his mix:

Dario Zenker on Ilian Tape
I really like this dark and gloomy track by Dario on his label Ilian Tape. A very spacial pitch-black dynamic techno track. You can definitively hear another alter ego Dario is producing as.

O/V/R Live in London
This live version is simply a slamming monster.
Bombing kick drum. Intense and very pushing forward. I love the part when the subdued hihat comes in.

Dettmann’s Definition for Morphosis “Too far”
This track reminds me on a conversation I had with my Grounded Theory partner Micha about if Techno can be “sexy”. “Sexy” not in a rude way. More in an attractive way and this interpretation by Marcel Dettmann makes me say that Techno definitely can be sexy!

The Secret Initiative IV
I am a big fan of this Unknown, maybe known artist who is releasing on this label. Very trippy long tracks. Well produced. I like all of the releases so far and I am always pleased about new releases on The Secret Initiative.

Skudge on Ann Aimee
This is the perfect example of a track I could listen to for ever. The way Skudge produced that track attracts me very much. Reduced structures which will never get boring. To me possibly the strongest track on the Ann Aimee compilation “Inertia”.

Dean Paul’s one of Droid’s select resident DJs. Supporting Droid with his photography, video, and other media, Dean is known to most as a DJ for all occasions. A dedicated music head since the early 90s, he’s since played just about every kind of venue and always finds the perfect music for the time, place, and crowd. This set for D-Node was recorded last November at Cause in Minneapolis and features a range of sounds from bass music to deep techno to mid-90s acid. Enjoy.

Adam Beyer has become an emblem of Swedish techno, combining a plethora of techno styles with innovative techniques that have a powerful impact on audiences across the globe. Alongside Ida Engberg, this is sure to be a night laced with uncompromising drum lines and techno funk.

ABOUT DRUMCELL:
Drumcell ‘s constant push into the bleeding edges of music technology has earned him the title of product specialist for Native Instruments. He is out there pushing the limits of what current technology has to offer- developing homebrew software as well as cutting edge hardware solutions to bring a fresh, innovative taste to his production and performances. Innovations that blur the lines between live performance and a traditional DJ set up creating “a thick blend of acidic techno and aggressive but funky minimalist groove”. Drumcell is one of the few artists exploiting the full power of software like Traktor and Ableton run through state-of-the-art Allen & Heath mixer technology. In conjunction, the trinity is used to create a hybrid of flexibility and fidelity for the ultimate in electronic music performance. Drumcell uses this platform to highlight his own needles-in-the-red brand of aggressive, discordant techno. Droid resident artists David Flores (Audio Injection/Truncate) and Vangelis + Vidal Vargas (Raíz) combine their production elements on the Degrees of Motion EP. David has been burning up the industry charts with his latest raw vibe alias Truncate. The spring/summer season in Europe would have been quite silent had it not been for the phrases CONCENTRATE and FOCUS. With releases and remixes on Enemy, Modularz and his own Truncate imprint, David has enjoyed strong support from renowned acts Dettmann, Klock, Luke Slater, Chris Liebing, Speedy J, DVS1 and countless others. The members of Raíz, Vangelis and Vidal Vargas, have also been making waves with their work on Historia Y Violencia, Silent Steps, Gynoid, and Droid. On this collaboration David and the Vargas brothers combine the dry and groovy tool perfection of Truncate with the concept and sense of depth Raíz has been developing over the last year. ABOUT PRIME:
Prime is the new above ground series by Droid Behavior. Our aim is to provide internationally renown techno house minimal and crossover talent to the city of Los Angeles on a monthly basis. Droid teams up with Derek Michael and Friendly Integration for this month’s edition of PRIME. This installment will feature a very special guest performance and US debut from Szare aka 19.26.1.18.5 of Horizontal Ground fame. Not much is known about the artist or label except the releases have been of the utmost quality and highly sought after by those in the techno world. Szare will perform a live PA of released and unreleased material for your listening pleasure. Also gracing the bill will be FI resident Eezir with a techno/uk broken beat warm up set, and FI innovator Derek Michael with a raucous live set.
