We’re back from a break and proud to present a mix from Echologist, AKA Brendon Moeller, who has recorded for Prologue, M_REC, Electric Deluxe, Mule, and Echocord among other labels. Moeller is a truly unique producer, with a unique take on the post-Basic Channel world of dub techno. His sound is inspired by a variety of music inside and outside dance, and it shines through in a style that can sound atmospheric, global, or psychedelic in ways attempted by few artists.

This set from Moeller is our first in a new, slower-paced approach to the podcast, as we’ll be carefully selecting particularly unique artists, stand-out sets, great live recordings, or carefully curated genre-blurring selections and sharing as they become available.

So until next time, enjoy this Echologist mix. Tracklist below.

Born and raised in Madrid, Jose Cabrera grew up on a wide range of musical genres, but in the techno realm come to appreciate the quality techno titans like M-Plant,Basic Channel, Axis, Chain Reaction, Mosaic, Downwards, UR and Dynamic Tension. His own style of raw, stripped down and hypnotic techno is a reflection of his influences. In 2012, he started the label A Harmless Deed together with his friend Damian Schwartz, releasing records of the likes of Fred P, Dj F, Marcos Cabral and Epiphany and he produced his first EP for the argentinian label Greener Records in the beginning of 2013. He’s since released on Fred P’s Soul People Music, Deeply Rooted House, Tresor and others, as well as his own JC Records.

This week’s mix is a reflection of the aesthetic described above, moving from hypnotic pads to some Mike Parker, getting harder to make its way to Robert Hood’s excellent “Side Effect” and finishing with a track that really sounds like it belongs on Tomorrow.

J.C. has an upcoming release on his own label as well as a split EP with Kastil on Ben Sims’ relaunched Symbolism.

This week, PoleGroup shares with us a set from another member of Spain’s techno elite, Reeko. Though he began DJing in ’97, it wasn’t until 2002 that Juan Rico began his prolific career as a producer, finding his Mental Disorder, Pole, and other label releases consistently in the sets of the world’s favorite hard techno DJs. Like those who play his records, Reeko performs at the top festivals and clubs in Europe and beyond, and this week’s set is another example of the sound that keeps him in-demand.

Paul Birken

This week we stray away from the center to share a live recording of Midwestern techno legend Paul Birken, recorded a few months ago at the IN:VOLVE event in Los Angeles. This set does not go down smoothly! It’s an hour 39 of raw, acidic techno with some adventurous transitions and mixing effects.

Since the mid-’90s, Birken has run with the vanguard of underground American techno, and this performance showcases his uncompromising approach to his sound.

Birken continues to experiment daily in his Minneapolis studio, and this Fall he’ll take on a string of hardware live shows in Europe.

Joton is Jose Angel Palacios Robles, New Rhythmic label founder and a DJ/producer with a decade of quality, focused techno tracks charted worldwide. Having risen in the Spanish techno scene, his production and performance notoriety have brought him to tour Europe’s techno epicenters and further outreaches.

The mix for D-Node was recorded earlier this month at Area 51 in Valladolid, northern Spain, and showcases his style of dark techno put together with fast, precision mixing, and a few transitional tricks.

Exium is the 15-year techno project between Spanish producers Valentín Corujo and Héctor Sandoval. Their work in this time has been shared across a wide network of labels including their own Nheoma, as their hard, rugged approach has acquired the tones of minimal, dub, and Detroit influences, which they also explore in solo projects.

Aside from their techno performance work in Spain and on worldwide tours, Exium have collaborated with the Fiumfoto collective to produce soundtracks for audiovisual works and collaborate on award-winning A/V performances.

The duo have released two full-length albums, Roots of Time (Nheoma, 2011) and A Sensible Alternative to Emotion (Pole Recordings, 2013).

The recording for D-Node touches on that harder techno core that pulls Exium to clubs around the world.

Project 313

This week D-Node welcomes back Project 313, the Detroit-based duo of Chad Parraghi and Nick Bien, founders of the label and events group Blank Code. This mix was recorded live and is the first two hours of a set they performed at Guadalajara’s Bar Americas, at Luis Flores’ record release party for his new Blank Code release Rituals of Submission. The mix runs through the dark, driving territory Blank Code is known for, with a wide variety of moving rhythms. No tracklist on this, though I notice Truncate’s Breakdown early on. You can fill in the rest.

This month, Project 313 are playing two shows for the festival in Detroit. One is the festival itself, where they’ll be performing at Saturday’s Underground Stage, and the other is Interface 47 / Scene 22, the after party we’re doing with Blank Code featuring Regis, Oscar Mulero, Cell Injection, Dustin Zahn, and many more.
